1) Identifying the microbes (fungi and bacteria) associated with marine invertebrates.
2) Discovering novel, bioactive compounds produced by the associated microbes (fungi and bacteria) in culture.
My current research focuses on identifying the microbes associated with the gorgonian coral, Eunicea fusca, from the Bahamian and French Islands. Through culturing studies, I hope to isolate a bacterium or fungi that produces the bioactive terpenes (particularly fuscol) found in E. fusca.
